How to Plan a Successful Hiking Trip

There’s no denying that hiking can be a fun and relaxing activity for you, especially when you’re taking a much-needed break from the big city.

Carefully planning a hiking trip is essential, as you’d be venturing into unknown terrain, and it would be unwise not to have some basic skills and knowledge to help guide you along the way.

Let’s Get Started!

If you’re hiking for the first time, the good news is that you don’t need some professional experience to go on a successful hiking adventure.

Aside from learning some basic skills like how to filter water in the wild, tying knots, lighting a bonfire, checking the weather, etc., it’s pretty easy to hike.

However, the popular saying ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail’ applies to hiking because a lack of proper planning could render your trip uneventful. Once you have the time, an adventurous mindset, and proper preparation, then you’re on the right path! Eager to get started?

Here are ways you can plan and achieve a successful hiking trip.

1. Hit the Gym

Though hiking is a fun and relaxing activity, you still have to be prepared physically. Get in shape right before the trip by engaging in simple exercises such as squats, sit-ups, jogging, and running to boost your cardio and strengthen you.

2. You Don’t Want to Get Lost!

One important step to a successful hiking trip is choosing and getting acquainted with your trails. If you’re planning to stay out for just a day, you can find a trail nearby and hike around your vicinity.

If you’re planning an interstate hiking trip, you have to look at your maps, navigational guides, or brochures to learn about the trails and how to access them. Also, consider factors like the length and difficulty of the trails you’re choosing, getting parking spaces, restrooms, as well as diners.

3. Choose Safety Over Fashion

Hiking can be a safe adventure, but sometimes it could be otherwise. It would be best if you placed your safety above everything else. As much as you want to enjoy and have fun when hiking, remember that safety comes first, which is why you should choose comfortable clothes and shoes for hiking.

Depending on how long or short your hike is, choose comfortable and appropriate clothes and shoes that can provide protection against insects and help keep you cool or warm, depending on the weather and temperature.

4. Remember, Less Is More!

When packing for a hiking trip, you have to pack light. You don’t want to run out of breath twenty minutes into your hike simply because your backpack is heavy. That would suck.

Make sure you only pack your essentials when hiking. Safety items, water, along light snacks are just enough for the trip. Taking more than necessary would only leave you stressed, which could ruin the fun of the hiking trip.

5. Watch Out for the Skies

There’s no telling when the weather could switch up. They are that unpredictable! It is therefore important to check the weather forecast days before venturing out. Still, you must watch out for the weather even when you’re hiking already because you never know when the thunderstorms could be rolling in!

6. Be at Alert

Being security conscious should never be underestimated. Your hike might be a long or short one, and even though you’ve been acquainted with your trail, it doesn’t hurt to look behind your shoulders occasionally.

It would be best if you tried not to hike alone, especially in unknown areas. Also, if you notice a strange face among your hiking group or notice some weird movement around your trail, do make sure you seek help.

7. Don’t Go Past Your Limit

It sure feels good to be right there in the open, being at one with nature and taking in the long, peaceful, and fresh air, but everything must come to an end.

You have to know your limit and when to stop. It’s often better to choose short trails, so you can easily find your way back. Choosing to go extra and continuing your hike might leave you feeling weak and even stranded. Always set realistic hiking goals and know when to stop.
